What are Aggregates?
Aggregates are a variety of coarse, raw materials used in construction. Some examples of aggregates include sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, and a variety of recycled aggregate products. According to the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA), aggregates are the most mined material in the world.
Aggregates are also a component of composite materials such as concrete and asphaltic concrete that serves as reinforcement to add strength. Aggregates are not just used in concrete, but also widely used in drainage systems such as retaining wall drains and roadside edge drains. Aggregates can be used as base material under foundations, roads and railroads for leveling or grading. Aggregates are the essential base or glue for all construction whether commercial or residential.
